Deepest winter
We are now in January. Christmas is over. The climax (or anti-climax) of New Year’s Eve has popped and then fizzled. There is now a time of waiting before spring comes. As much as the capitalist structures will try and persuade you that now is the time for buying diet books and rushing off to the gym, now is the perfect time for rest.
Hibernation is a state of minimal activity and metabolic depression that occurs in winter.
What this means is, that we slow down to survive.
In the spring, the sap will rise and the energy will be thick and strong in the air. But that time is not now. Now is the time for heeding the message of the season, and being still.
Still, safe, warm.
Safety is one of the most fundamental of all human needs. Now is the time to create safety and comfort in your spaces. Over the next eight weeks, I will be writing about hibernation and physical and emotional nourishment. As we get towards the end of February, there may be more activity, more movement, more venturing forth as the days lengthen and the air starts to change. But for now, it is going to be all about not disturbing the soil, not forcing the growth, letting the forces of nature replenish and rest.
First gentle task of my 2022? My life-changingly blissful, sorting of the seed box.
